Concept of Poetry Appreciation (4) : Drawing Meaning through Semiotics

    By admin | January 8, 2009

For semiotics, the text as literature realities that are presented to reader would have communicative potential. One of the ownerships of the communicative potential is marked by the use of language symbols. Symbols of language in the text of literature are performed as present from author’s subjective motivation. The meaning also refer to something that others outside structures that is contained in the text of literature itself.

In an effort to understand the symbol, there are four approaches that, according to A. Teeuw, have been adequate for use. The approaches include:

    1. Expressive approach; is the approach that emphasizes on role of the poet as an expressive subject.

    2. Mimesis approach; is the approach that emphasizes on the relationship with the real world.
    3. Objective approach; only see on the paper, off from the real world of author and readers.

    4. Pragmatic approach; is the approach that emphasizes on the function of literature provided by the text itself for the reader.

Along with the existence of literature as text-dimensional reality that is autonomous and as part of human creative culture, the existence of structuralism and semiotics complements to each other. Through structuralism, someone will be able to understand the intrinsic meaning of the literature text methodologically, while the determination of text meaning extrinsically can be obtained by way of semiotics works.
