The Bali Bombers: Are They Mujahids or Terrorists?
By admin | November 17, 2008
When I sat on the bench of second grade in High school, I was amazed by two figures of Palestinian Woman ‘terrorists’ from the Marxist Palestinian faction PFLP. They were Suhaila Sami Andrawes Sayeh and Leila Khaled. What was my reason? Was it because of their ideology? Alternatively, was it for their action? No! My only reason was very simple: because they were beautiful women.
In less than five year later, in 2002, I heard names of Abdul Aziz a.k.a. Imam Samudra, Amrozy, and Ali Ghufron a.k.a. Mukhlas. Then, what is the correlation between Suhaila Sayeh and Leila Khaled with the three people who are later often called ‘First Bali Bombing Trio’? It is the title that they have –Terrorist.
The Trio confessed that they have directed a Bombing in Bali on 12 October 2002. They assume that their action is a form of Jihad in a global war between Muslim people with the United States and its allies. They consider that world in present have been a global battlefield, where there is no longer separation among peaceful area and conflict area, so each attacking action can be conducted anytime and anyplace during this war.
I definitely do not agree to the concept of jihad assumed by the trio. This is an expression appear from my mind and thinking. Not even a moment, I ever confess that what has been happened in Bali on 12 October 2002 is a jihad action. For me, my opinion is clear and will be consistent; Bali Bombing is not a form of Jihad –only an accident of history in the timeline of Islamic civilization.
Despite my thinking and opinion, I also have to bow the obligation burdened by Allah Ta’ala to me as a Muslim to love the Trio as my brothers:
‘Laa yu’minu ahaddukum hatta yuhiba li akhihi maa yuhibbu linafsih’
Then shall we follow to call them with the title of ‘terrorist’? A long as I know, they are also human being and they believe in Islamic teachings. As a Muslim, they are human being who own adherence to Islamic teachings, seriously deepen the teaching of their religion, and stand up for the people of Islam.
Every event in this world excesses other events -this phenomenon is popular as ‘the causality method’. In Indonesian culture, this is toned with expression ‘ there is no smoke if there is no fire’, or Newton words: ‘each reaction is caused by an action‘.
The Bali Bombing action, undoubtedly, has a correlation to others events in this world. What are they? What events triggered that kind of ‘jihad’? The answer is clear for there is a Dark Ages of Islamic civilization as the raising of Western capitalism and liberalism.
It is true that have been many victims caused by the Bali Bombing action. However, there also have been more victims caused by Western capitalism and liberalism and their policies. For example, the Western policies to support Israeli in Middle East conflicts have create miseries for millions of Palestinian people. The latest policies to invade Iraq and Afghanistan also create similar problem for millions of Muslims who live in both countries.
If people discuss Bali Bombing for it victimized many people to death, then why can people admit that there have been more victims caused by Western actions in whole World? Bali Bombing, nevertheless, was just a ‘smoke’ while Western actions and policies are the ‘fire that still burn’. Sometime, we are too busy to put our attention to the ‘smoke’ and forget to extinguish the ‘fire’.
As the ‘smoke’, Bali Bombing narrows our breath and makes our eyes smarting. Nevertheless, the wounds caused by the fire burn are clearly more dangerous for people. So, what should Muslims do? I think that the Muslim Ummah need a kind of Jihad that has a nature of water for it is able to extinguish the fire, not just being a smoke of fire.
The Bali Bombing Trio has now gone. As their brother in Islam, I have prayed that any good deeds of them will be responded by Allah’s reward. I expect that their mighty spirit of defending Muslim Ummah and their love to Islam will also be rewarded by Allah. They might be distorted in drawing the meaning of Jihad, and it is their business with Allah. For they who agree to their concept of Jihad, they will be a heroic mujahids. I respect to their opinion, although I absolutely do not agree. However, for you who do not agree to their ‘jihad’, I think that you should think twice before rewarding the title of terrorist for the title is more suitable to be attached to the United States and European countries.

the impacts of Bali Bombings i don’t think will give any positive side for indonesia, islam, humanity,or anything, just being another dark history of indonesia. That is the real Impacts those people calling themself as Jihadders has created. I’m sorry but I think those people are just fools.
If I want to make a jihad..I’ll kill all the big criminals that made our country broke, worse and poor–>corrupt leaders, corrupt civil servants, corrupt departements..rather than claiming myself “hero” for killing innocent own countrymen
