Hijriyya, the Islamic Calendar System
By admin | December 23, 2008
From Muharram to Dzulhijjah, each month has 30 or 29 days. So there are 354 days in a year. In every 30 years, 11 years is leap years (the Dzulhijjah month has 30 days), they are years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29. On 29th December 2008, we start the new year 1st Muharram 1429 Hijriyya, the 18th year in the cycle of 1411-1440.
Moon circulation is exact. So the Muslims can have a scientific count to determine the beginning of fasting month, and Aidil Fitri. The next Ramadan fasting will be started on 22nd August 2009 and Aidil Fitri will be celebrated on 20th September 2009. Hopefully, there will be no difference between hisab and ru’yah on the future.
In every 32 or 33 years, there is a year in the CE which has two Aidil Fitri as the last in 2000 (end of January and beginning of December). The Muslim employees should have extra salary twice in the year, and the Aidil Fitri together with the New Year’s Day. This phenomenon has occurred in the year 1870, 1903, 1935, 1968, and will be happened again in year 2033, 2065, 2098, 2130, and so on.
Conversion of Hijriyya to the Christian year, or vice versa, can be done by using the following formula:
CE = 32/33 H + 622
H = 33/32 (CE – 622)
Each year, Hijriyya calendar has 11 days faster than the Christian calendar, so the difference between year numbers of both calendars is slowly increasing over time. Hijriyya’s year number slowly ‘chases’ CE year number. According to the formula above, both calendars will have same year number in the year 20526 Hijriyya that will coincide with the 20,526 CE!
