Is now year 2009?
By admin | December 17, 2008
What year is now? The answer is 2009, if we follow Dionysius Exiguous estimation that Jesus was born in 47 Julian. This calculations was based on the data in Gospel of Luke that Jesus started to teach the Son of Israel in the 15th year of Emperor Tiberius governance, who governed from 60 to 83 Julian (14-37 CE). So, Luke tells that this event was happened in 75 Julian (29 CE). Luke was playing tic by stated that the age of Jesus was “approximately 30 years” (quasi annorum triginta). This made Dionysius estimating that Jesus was born in 47 Julian, which he defined as Year 1 of Anno Domini.
In fact, Dionysius’s estimation is not correct! Indeed, both the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Matthew records that the birth of Jesus was happened on the time of King Herod in Palestine, which means that it was happened in between 37 BC and 4 BC (10 to 43, Julian). Luke also says that Jesus was born when Quirinius, the governor of Syria at the time of Emperor Augustus (governed from 27 BC to 14 CE), hold a population census in Palestine. This census, of course, took place after the Quirinius hold his office since 6 BC (41 Julian). Thus, it is possible that Jesus birth year is 5 BC (42 Julian). So, if we want to consistently calculate years since the birth of Jesus, now should be the year of 2014!
